CHEM 211 and CHEM 211L (each with a grade of C- or better)
CHEM 212LR
· Demonstrate the relationship between the intermolecular forces in liquids and solids and their physical properties and solubilities.
· Describe the factors affecting reaction rates and how to employ chemical kinetics theories to validate or reject reaction mechanisms.
· Explain the theoretical aspects of chemical equilibrium as well as their application to determine the extent of various types of reactions, including acid-base and precipitation reactions.
· Solve for the amounts of reactants and products at equilibrium and calculate pH during acid-base reactions.
· Use the major thermodynamic functions to predict the direction of physical, chemical, and electrochemical processes.
Lecture recordings, lecture notes in PDF format, animations, and other useful study tools will be provided on the class website. We will cover the first 11 chapters of the textbook according to the class schedule.
Homework problems from the end of each chapter will be assigned regularly. The homework will be administered via WebAssign and will be graded. These assignments will reinforce concepts and principles described in the text and assist you in preparing for the examinations. From the class website, click on the WebAssign link. I will create your WebAssign accounts once I get the student rosters. Your WebAssign Username and initial Password will be given to you by your teacher. This process will also create a Cengage account for you with the same username and password. Cengage is the parent company of WebAssign. You will be able to change your password and your profile details from within your Cengage account if you wish. However, please do not change the fields with your name and email address as they are taken directly from Pathway and should match the UMKC records. After the initial grace period of about 2 weeks, you will be required to purchase access ($10.50) in order to use WebAssign.
Four hour exams will be administered during the semester. They will be multiple choice, but you are expected to show your work for all problems. The lowest exam score will be dropped. The final exam will be cumulative over all material discussed in class. Scientific calculators may be used on all exams. Sample tests can be found on the class website.
