Webassign
To login to Webassign, go to the class website and click on
Webassign Homework (or click
here).
I will create your Webassign accounts once I get the student rosters. Your WebAssign
Username and initial Password will be given to you by your
teacher. This process will also create a Cengage account for you
with the same username and password. Cengage is the parent company of
WebAssign. You will be able to change your password and your profile details
from within your Cengage account if you wish. However, please do not change the
fields with your name and email address as they are taken directly from Pathway
and should match the UMKC records. After the
initial grace period of about 2 weeks, you will be required to purchase access
($10.50) in order to use WebAssign. You should also
go to the Notifications link and checkmark the
five boxes at the bottom, so that if you ask me questions through Webassign,
you will receive an email notification when I respond to your questions.
The homework is under Current Assignments. Typically,
3 attempts are allowed on each part of each
question (unless it says otherwise in the question itself). I highly
recommend that you submit each part of each question one
at a time so you can see the feedback and make corrections to your work.
You can print the homework, work on it, and later submit the questions one at a
time and make corrections. If you have trouble with some questions, you
can use the Ask Your Teacher link on the right
side of each question, and I will try to answer it as soon as I can. Note that
each student will have a different set of questions.
Webassign uses various types of questions. The
multiple choice, multiple select and pull-down menu questions are
self-explanatory. But there are 2 types of numerical questions.
1.
Numerical questions having a
plain answer box are graded for accuracy only.
The error tolerance is +-3% of the answer, so these types of questions should be
answered with at least 3 significant digits in order to avoid rounding errors.
2.
Numerical questions having an
answer box with a small blue icon at front are
graded not only for accuracy but for the number of significant figures in the
answer which depends on the sig figs in the data and the type of calculations
involved. This is covered in section 1.5 of the book. The sig figs
will be worth only 5% of the answer, so if in doubt, it would be better to enter
more sig figs rather than less in order to avoid a rounding error and avoid
getting the question completely wrong. The error tolerance of these
questions will be +-3 in the last sig fig the student is supposed to report.
3.
Webassign accepts both decimal and scientific
notation in these boxes. To enter a number in
scientific notation, use the following examples:
The practice tests are on the class website in the section "Sample Tests". The tests are interactive, self graded and can be taken as many times as desired.
The 1st Lab Meeting is scheduled for
TBD.
You are expected to read the
sections "Background Information" and "Procedure" and to complete the section
"Pre-lab Assignment" for each laboratory experiment to be performed.
The TAs at the beginning of each experiment will check for completion of
the Pre-lab Assignments. You will also need to have Take-home Assignment
#1 completed and bring it at the lab meeting. It will be collected
and graded. Experiments:
Take-home Assignment #1: "Using Exponential Notation and Significant Figures" (due at the first lab meeting)
Exp. 1. "The Glass Burner and Glass Working"
Exp. 2. "Investigating Density, Miscibility and Solubility"
Exp. 3. "Separating and Identifying Food Dyes by Paper Chromatography"
Exp. 4. "Writing Chemical Equations and Identifying Unknown Solutions Using Microscale Techniques"
The 2nd Lab Meeting is scheduled for
TBD.
Take-home Assignment #2:
"Dimensional Analysis" (due at the second lab meeting)
Exp. 5.
"Standardizing a Sodium Hydroxide Solution with Oxalic Acid",
Exp. 6.
"Synthesizing Aspirin"
Exp. 7.
"Synthesizing Alum"
